Concept
The Sovereign is a student journal of political science and thought published through Saginaw Valley State University. As Technical Editor for the Winter 2026 issue, I was responsible for developing the publication’s visual presentation and preparing the journal for its final printed format.
The design uses a classic engraved illustration, deep blue color palette, and traditional serif typography to reflect the journal’s academic subject matter. The visual direction was intended to feel established and scholarly while maintaining a clean, contemporary structure appropriate for a university publication.
Description
As Technical Editor, I designed the front and back covers and developed the interior layout system for the Winter 2026 issue. Because the journal contains long-form student writing, readability and consistency were central to the design. A structured typographic hierarchy, generous margins, recurring headers, page numbering, and consistent spacing create a cohesive reading experience across articles of varying lengths.
The project required careful attention to typography, page flow, image placement, and consistency throughout the publication. Final files were prepared in Adobe InDesign for physical production, taking the project from digital layout through a completed, professionally printed journal.
Working on The Sovereign provided experience with a real publication workflow in an academic environment, balancing editorial content with visual design while preparing a multi-page document for print production.
